How to use this tool
- Enter a domain such as example.com. Leave out https://, paths and port numbers.
- Choose the record type. A is IPv4, AAAA is IPv6, MX is mail routing, and TXT is text such as verification or mail-policy records.
- Run the lookup and inspect the answer, its TTL and the resolver's response status. Copy values when you need them for troubleshooting.
Which DNS record should I check?
A and AAAA records point a name to IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. A domain can return several addresses, or answer for one version and not the other. CNAME records point a name to another name. The resolver may include both that alias and the address it leads to.
MX records describe mail destinations and priorities. NS identifies nameservers, SOA carries zone-management information, and CAA restricts certificate issuance. TXT records hold text; a domain can have several independent TXT entries. For a DMARC policy, query _dmarc.example.com rather than the root domain.
What does the TTL mean?
The time to live is the number of seconds a resolver can retain a DNS answer. A recursive resolver may return the remaining cache lifetime, so a TTL can count down between checks. An old answer may persist until an earlier TTL expires.
This tool samples Cloudflare's recursive resolver at the stated time. It does not query every location worldwide, inspect your device's cache or identify the resolver your browser normally uses. DNS answers can vary by resolver, location and deployment.
No answer is a useful result
An existing name can have no records of the selected type. NXDOMAIN means the queried name does not exist according to that response. SERVFAIL means resolution failed; it can have several causes, including a DNSSEC validation problem. It does not automatically mean the domain is unregistered.
The query is sent to a fixed DNS resolver, not to a web server at the entered domain. This is a DNS inspection tool, not a website-availability test or a DNS leak test.
